OUR STUDENTS

Mathematics

At Woodford Primary School, our Mathematics curriculum is designed to develop confident, capable and flexible problem-solvers. We deliver a structured, evidence-informed approach that builds strong foundations in number, fluency and conceptual understanding, while progressively extending students into reasoning, problem-solving and mathematical modelling. Clear, whole-school learning sequences aligned to the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 ensure consistency across classrooms and guarantee that essential knowledge and skills are explicitly taught, practised and consolidated.

Our approach emphasises deep understanding over surface learning. Students are taught to explain their thinking, represent ideas in multiple ways and apply strategies across a range of contexts. Through the use of concrete materials, visual representations and abstract reasoning, learners develop strong number sense and confidence in calculating. Regular formative assessment guides responsive teaching, allowing staff to target individual learning needs and maximise growth for every student.

Professional collaboration through our Numeracy Learning Communities strengthens teacher practice and ensures ongoing refinement of curriculum delivery. At Woodford, we set high expectations in Mathematics and celebrate progress at every stage, fostering persistence, resilience and a belief that all students can achieve success in this essential area of learning.

Explicit structured literacy

At Woodford Primary School, we are committed to delivering high-impact teaching practices that maximise learning growth for every student. Our implementation of an explicit structured literacy pedagogy reflects this commitment. Grounded in the science of reading, structured literacy provides systematic, sequential and cumulative instruction in the essential components of reading and writing — including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

Our approach ensures that skills are taught directly and explicitly, with teachers modelling, guiding practice and providing immediate feedback to support mastery. Learning sequences are carefully aligned to the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and are informed by ongoing assessment, allowing teaching to be responsive to individual student needs. This consistency across classrooms ensures that all students — regardless of their starting point — have access to high-quality literacy instruction.

Structured literacy at Woodford is supported by professional learning within our Literacy Learning Communities, ensuring staff continually refine practice in line with contemporary research. Through clear routines, evidence-based programs and high expectations for all learners, we are strengthening literacy foundations and improving student outcomes, empowering our students to become confident, capable and independent readers and writers.
